It’s meant to rain again next week which means every gardeners enemy, the slug, will be looking for tasty titbits in our gardens. A friend told me earlier in the week that Cedarwood Oil is meant to be a good slug deterrent. I suppose they would’nt like the smell. Here’s the recipe:
Put 8 drops of Cedarwood Oil and 1 pint of water into a saucepan with a tight-fitting lid. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 5 minutes, leaving the lid on the saucepan throughout. Use 2 tablespoons per watering can. I’m definitely going to try this one although I wonder if the veg would taste of Cedarwood! Maybe water it in around plants .
I read today that rice containing human genes is about to be approved for production. Is the world gone mad? Have things not gone far enough when we have fish genes in tomatoes and strawberries to help them store better, scorpion genes in potatoes to kill pests in US and goodness knows what else we don’t know about. Many products today contain soya and maize, it’s a fairly safe bet that a high percentage if not all of these are GM. In February of this year, in a final act of treachery before he left office, the then Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith decided to support” EU proposals to authorise the placing on the market of food, food ingredients and feed containing, consisting of or produced from genetically modified maize and cotton. Ireland will also support EU proposals to introduce a tolerance for the low level presence of, as yet, unauthorised GM varieties in imports of animal feed.”
Well if that’s not enough to get people to take control of their food supply then nothing is. Ireland imports about 90% of it’s fruit and veg. Shameful statistic. We were in the not too distant past self-sufficient from our own land. We even had 4 sugar factories, now dismantled and working perfectly fine in Poland and Israel. Take back at least some of your power. Potatoes, turnips, carrots, onions and many more crops grow fine in Irish conditions. The satisfaction is better than anything to be gained working for the Man!
